That said, you may want to consider looking into coachsurfing.com. I've had friends how've used the service while travelling around the mainland and it's apparently a pretty great way to go. Comes with the all usual problems inherent in p2p lodging, e.g. imperfect review system, differing host expectations, ect, but it's got a large enough user base that you can always just switch places within your current city if you and your host aren't seeing eye to eye.
