各取所需

One of my Chinese friends mentioned this when I was speaking with him. I've seen it translated as "Each takes what he needs." What I understood from my friend is that it can be used to mean that in a relationship each person has their own goals and needs. It didn't seem to have a have negative connotation from the way he explained it.

Another foreigner I spoke with about it said he thought this may have come from Communist teachings. Anyone familiar with it and can expand on the usage?

Thanks.
