太平紳士 (Justice of Peace)

太平紳士 (Justice of Peace) seems to exist only in Hong Kong.

A lot of people from Mainland and Taiwan scratch their heads when they encounter this term.

If I were not mistaken, 太平紳士 functions as Notary Public + Ombudsman + 包青天.

They visit the prisons, sign documents to certify things, etc. An old boss of mine (a brit who has moved to Brisbane after retirement) told me that he had to take an exam to become a JP there.

Oh and there are official (官守) and non-official (非官守) JP.
