Gav Posted July 2, 2005 at 03:16 PM Report Share Posted July 2, 2005 at 03:16 PM HI I read somewhare that the chinese symbol for suffering and disaster is a combination of two others - tragedy and opportunity. Is that right? And can someone show what those 3 actually look like? Thanks Gav
randyj Posted July 2, 2005 at 05:02 PM Report Share Posted July 2, 2005 at 05:02 PM 危机 is translated as crisis. Danger is 危险 , and opportunity is 机会 .
zhwj Posted July 3, 2005 at 01:38 AM Report Share Posted July 3, 2005 at 01:38 AM Please read Victor Mair's How a misunderstanding about Chinese characters has led many astray, which demolishes this myth, before trying to do anything with the characters randyj suggested. gato Posted July 3, 2005 at 03:19 AM Report Share Posted July 3, 2005 at 03:19 AM The myth was probably started by some enterprising American MBA type. Now the myth seems to have gone full circle and begun to be propagated in China, so that if you tell people in China now that there's opportunity in a crisis they'll know what you're talking about, whereas they would have no idea 20 years ago.
