Changing visa type?

I just moved to ChengDu and next month my visa expires. Its a spouse one year visa. However, immigration are telling me that we have to have lived here for at least 6 months to be able to apply for another one year spouse visa. They said we have to go back to HeiLongJiang and apply but we obviously don't live there so don't have any of the necessary documents required for there either.

So I wanted to apply for a travel visa or other visa type to take our time here up to half a year so that we can apply for the spouse visa but they're saying I can't change my visa type either??

Seems really weird but I'm used to customer service people in China loving to respond with 办不了,没办法 etc. So I thought I'd ask here to see if that's really the case and if it really is, what options I have?
