atitarev Posted August 9, 2005 at 04:11 AM Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 04:11 AM Hello, it's my reposts from http://www.chinese-forums.com/showthread.php?p=44238#post44238 Audacity is a tool that could be used for recording http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A//audacity.sourceforge.net/&ei=ahP4QujUB8f-4AG09f3rDQ Audio files can be attatched to your reply. Thanks Roddy! Here are my first requests - a text and a dialog: (no fear - OK ) Your help is appreciated! A text: TEXT START TEXT END Doesn't matter if you have some regional accent - but I'm learning Mandarin. Let me know if you prefer that in traditional characters, I prefer simplified but I can convert (and error check) if you can't read simplified. A dialog: DIALOG START DIALOG END I am not pushing my luck. If you can do it, please do, if you can't, don't laugh. The texts are from a pinyin only textbook and I typed in the Chinese text myself. I hope there are not many typos. gato Posted August 9, 2005 at 05:31 AM Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 05:31 AM Ok, Anatoli. I'll be your first volunteer. 您不以前年轻多了 in the dialog seems be missing a 比 before 以前. I read the original text without the correction above. I read the hotel text, too, but it sounded dumb, so I'm only giving you the dialog. The clip is a 32Kbps Windows Media Audio (wma) file. gato Posted August 9, 2005 at 07:28 AM Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 07:28 AM You're welcome, Anatoli. We'll expect you to recite it for all of us by next week. Have you heard of 相声 (two-man standup comedy)? The performers usually spoke Beijing Mandarin, with plenty of local colloquialism thrown in. Though not for the beginner, it's probably some of the more entertaining listening material you'll find. 侯宝林 is widely acknowledged as the best 相声 performer ever lived. Here's a performance with 侯宝林 and 郭启儒, entitled "改行" ("Change of Profession"): http://joy.ayinfo.ha.cn/qymb/xs/hbl/gh.ra (Real Audio) and transcript http://www.kpworld.com/jsps/xiangsheng/works/readwork.jsp?workid=18030 More recordings at http://joy.ayinfo.ha.cn/qymb/hbl.htm http://comic.987654.com/ Transcripts at http://www.kpworld.com/xiangsheng/zuopin/wenben.htm
Dennis Posted August 9, 2005 at 08:01 AM Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 08:01 AM If I remembered correctly the Hotel text is text from the Teach yourself Chinese series which have tape and CD recording.
roddy Posted August 9, 2005 at 09:40 AM Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 09:40 AM Just made some changes to the back-end which were preventing people from uploading attachments of greater than 1MB (I'd upped the forums limit to 3MB, but there was a limit on the size of files that could be inserted into the database which I can't control, so files are now going into a folder rather than a database). Amusingly enough this resulted in me getting multi-megabyte error messages in my email, but never mind Roddy
atitarev Posted August 9, 2005 at 11:44 AM Author Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 11:44 AM If I remembered correctly the Hotel text is text from the Teach yourself Chinese series which have tape and CD recording. That's right, Dennis - both fragments are from Teach Yourself Beginner's Chinese text but neither this text or the dialog have sound recordings. Gato, great recording, thanks again! Will anyone attempt sound recording this text, please?

geraldc Posted August 9, 2005 at 12:47 PM Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 12:47 PM Well if it's just people speaking different dialects you want you could always try stuff like this: http://www.audioscriptures.org It's got cantonese, mandarin and teochow readings of the same text etc, and it's free, and there are loads of sources for the text on the net. Missionaries always seem to be pretty good at learning languages...
atitarev Posted August 9, 2005 at 12:54 PM Author Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 at 12:54 PM I have just checked the Teach Yourself site and there are CD's available Yes, they are available but not for ALL texts and dialogs. atitarev Posted August 14, 2005 at 11:05 AM Author Report Share Posted August 14, 2005 at 11:05 AM Shibo, this is another text from "Teach Yourself Beginner's Chinese". Why did you post it? I've got ALL texts and dialogs in a file in Chinese characters - typed in myself. The textbook is entirely in pinyin.
