I wouldn't be so hasty about deciding that a school with a dead English language page is not interested in taking on independent students. In fact, you might learn more Chinese at a place with fewer westerners. You might consider showing up in person and checking out a few schools. The admissions process in China is not like in the West. Given the financial incentive of enrolling a foreign student, many schools will admit you in a matter of days.

That's true, which is why I've settled on BNU. Also, I was taking a bit of a "shortcut" with my previous post. I don't necessarily need an English web page, but I do expect one in English, Japanese, Korean or whatever - just to prove that someone is available who can organise courses/accommodation who speaks a foreign language.

However, I did take your advice on board, in advance :-), and I got one of my new Chinese friends (they're all so friendly in Beijing - can't imagine the same welcome as a tourist in NYC or London) to search the chinese web pages for info. Now, I know I could probably turn up at a smaller place waving bundles of cash around, but I'm a bit of a control freak and need information up front.
