Nanjing 3 day break ideas?

No, Yangzhou is in the Suzhou/Hangzhou realm you mentioned.

In the relatively nearby Taishan/Huangshan realm you also have Jiuhuashan.

If you're into tea stuff there's the Dingshan pottery village near Yixing. Further afield in this realm there's Jingdezhen.

Lots of small water villages dotted around. Get one of those guidebooks to 中国古城.

Indeed, getting guidebooks to nearby areas at your nearby bookstore would provide a practical aspect to your Chinese studies.

If you're interested in seeing any of the gardens in Suzhou, be there when they open first thing in the morning before the hordes descend.

Even though the school holidays are now over, this is a public-holiday weekend and the sights are likely to be very crowded.
