How would you translate 吐槽?

Recommended Posts

All,

1. How would you translate 吐槽?

2.  Also, what is the tone on 吐? (3rd or 4th or either?)

3. Can you give some examples on how 吐槽 is used?

If you put 吐槽 thru various translators/dictionaries you get different definitions and I've gotten various ones from friends.  The tone for 吐 varies too depending on the source (but what do you hear???).

This group has a vast array of experiences and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.  Also, sometimes questions on translations trigger interesting discussions (feel free to start one....)

"Complain" or some synonym (grumble, whine, carp)

3rd tone, tǔ. I've never heard it with 4th tone, though I guess it could be a variant

I would like to translate 吐槽 into joke and complain with double meanings. The difference is the first meaning is less serious than the second one.

The original meaning of this word is to comment sth and it comes from Minnan Language.

For its pragmatic use, I also recommend a Chinese TV show named Roast!, which is almost a talk show. Here is the like on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7KOdZVxPEk.

If you can understanding their speech, you may know how to use this word.

Pleco has only CC meaning( Does not have PLC, UNI or any Outliar add-on) as below:

”HZ 吐槽⧸嘈
PY tùcáo (or tǔcáo)

1 (slang) to roast
2 to ridicule
3 also pr. [tǔcáo] “

I think HZ is hanzi and PY is pinyin and pr is people republic, which is China where they use 4 th tone?

Huh, seems like a pretty even split between 3rd/4th tone.

Nope, "also pr." is "also pronounced". CC-CEDICT uses "PRC" for People's Republic.
