Why's 舟 (boat, ship) the semantic component of 般 (sort, kind, class) ?

How does 舟 (any boat, barge, ship) semantically appertain to 般 (sort, kind, class)? What semantic notion underlies them? Their meanings feel unrelated to me!

略說: 甲骨文從「凡」從「攴」。「凡」象側立的盥盤之形，是「槃」、「盤」的象形初文。後增「攴」旁作。金文「般」訛為從「舟」從「殳」。盥盤之義後來以「槃」或「盤」表示。
