Single words, single syllables

I have noticed the importance to know single syllables that can be single words and memorize the tone so learning vocabulary

can be easier. For example, 睡 as in tā shuì le bā gè xiǎoshí 他 睡 了 八 个 小时 He slept eight hours. but can also be a two syllable

word or a compound word so I am wondering if there is a list of those words or verbs that can be used to learn and use them in

regular conversations or how have you learn those words or verbs to use them regularly and become second nature without

thinking or trying to translate them in a conversation??

try read more text,newspaper .i think it is more useful than creating a 'list'. because it may make you mad.Chinese usually depends on context.

他 睡 了 八 个 小时. could be written as 他 睡 了 八 小时, 他 睡 了 八 个 钟。here,小时=钟=hours.

but 我想买个钟 ,the 钟 is not 'hour',it meas 'a clock'。
