Ian_Lee Posted November 15, 2005 at 12:56 AM Report Share Posted November 15, 2005 at 12:56 AM During last weekend, two Chinese film award ceremonies were held almost simultaneously and respectively -- Golden Rooster in Hainan and Golden Horse in Keelung. This is the first time Golden Rooster is opened to Chinese films from outside Mainland. Jackie Chan got the Best Actor award based on his role in "New Police Story". And in Keelung, the 42nd Golden Horse is widely called as Chinese Oscar. HK films almost sweeps a clean slate. Except Shu Qi who got the Best Actress Award, HK film Kung Fu Hustle won five major awards and Aaron Kwok won Best Actor award based on his performance in the film "Diversion". Ian_Lee Posted November 17, 2005 at 01:22 AM Author Report Share Posted November 17, 2005 at 01:22 AM Even though Golden Horse has the longest history and the highest reputation, they are now talking about closing it for good because Taiwanese films have no chance at all. If it really becomes a fact, then it is really regrettable. What is the reason of the demise of Taiwan's film industry? I guess: (1) Even Taiwanese audience are fed up with the art house movie. Maybe that is the reason why Chow beat Hou. (2) Unlike KMT era when 中影 got huge financial backing which then produced a lot of excellent movies that propagated Chinese traditional virtues as well as most of Ang Lee's movies, DPP are really thrifty in doling out any money for the film industry.
