Example sentence:

七月中旬,在法拉盛中心区各公寓大楼或住宅门口,出现了一份中英对照的停水通知,由纽约市政府设计与建设局发出。根据市法规,该局进行工程中,如需停水,一定要在24小时之前通知所有受影响的住户。知道施工区域内华裔颇多,怕有人看不懂英文,特地中英对照,的确也是用心良苦。

I can not explain “用心良苦” very well, because both my Chinese and my English are not very good.

I think its possible English translation may be “achieve certain goals through some kinds of hardworking”.

A Chinese song named “用心良苦”, it’s not bad, here’s the link if you’re interested to listen:

用心良苦

张宇

你的脸有几分憔悴

你的眼有残留的泪

你的唇美丽中有疲惫

我用去整夜的时间

想分辨在你我之间

到底谁会爱谁多一点

我宁愿看著你

睡得如此沉静

胜过你醒时决裂般无情

你说你想要逃

偏偏注定要落脚

情灭了爱熄了

剩下空心要不要

春已走花又落

用心良苦却成空

我的痛怎么形容

一生爱错放你的手

(music)

Thanks Elina! I've tried translating the bit of the song with “用心良苦” . Please see if it's more or less correct?

春已走花又落

用心良苦却成空

我的痛怎么形容

一生爱错放你的手

Spring has gone and flowers have finished

And my efforts have all been in vain

How can described my pains

of mis-placing all my love in your hands?

Does anyone have any less dramatic (and painful! ) examples to help me understanding “用心良苦”?

Sorry for off-topic, is it also right for the reason of 省略主语 / omitting subject:

How can describe my pains?

No. How my pains can be described.

用心良苦 has two parts: 用心 -> intentions, efforts 良苦 -> 良(good) 苦(苦心)

The whole thing means "good intentions/caring (that might or might not have produced good results.)"

I think " How can describe my pains ? " won't sound right in English, because English grammar almost always requires the subject (which is unlike Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.)

You know, even when there's no subject, you have to invent one:

It rains.

It's hard not to say something.

父母坚持要他念大学也是用心良苦(为了他好)。

她的父母反对他们的婚事也是用心良苦(为了她好),因为那个男的很穷。

用心良苦 is often used to describe good intentions that are not immediately apparent.

I think that 良 here does not mean 好(good) but 很,非常(very).

So the whole word has nothing to do with that the intention is good or not, and it is simply used to describe someone who pays much thought to some matter.

There're other words which have the similar meaning with nuances.

深谋远虑/深思熟虑 is commendatory (褒义词), 处心积虑 is derogatory (贬义词), while 用心良苦 is neutral (中性词).
