It is published by 北京大学出版社 and called 汉语水平考试词汇自测手册, and after giving 8840 words using 2907 characters (the lists vary a bit, my old book had 8828 words with 2905 characters, so the list is revised from time to time) there are also 1018 补充字, with examples of words they are used in, giving a grand total of 3925 characters. I think most Chinese people said 2907 characters was really not many, but the 3925 may come closer to full fluency in Chinese? The book costs 45 元 and has the ISBN number 7-301-05072-0/H . 0635.
