It portrays about the Wild West of China -- Manchuria in post Russo-Japanese War. In that sparsely populated Great Plain, fortresses were built. Bandits (Red Breard) roamed around while everyone took up his gun to defend himself and his family. 司馬中原also wrote another good novel called 路客與刀客. It has been produced into a Kung Fu western movie which combines gun fighting and kung fu. Other than that, he also wrote a lot of ghost stories.
