CHINA EFL/ESL JOBS: A Case of False Advertising

I already made fun of this in Thorn Tree in light of some recent posters who ask about the most remote parts of China because they just accepted a one year assignment without knowing one thing about their destination. Sure there are hundreds of misleading English teacher ads on sites like tefl.com and Daves ESL Cafe but you know what? There are thousands of poorly qualified native speakers calling themselves "English teachers" who absolutely deserve what they are signing up for.

Any experienced English teacher will easily dismiss an advertisement for a position in Henan province unless it's something cool like teaching English to Shao Lin kung fu monks. What kind of salary can one expect to earn in Henan province? The best jobs are in Guangdong's Pearl River Delta, Beijing, Shanghai, and a few secondary cities like Dalian and Tianjin. Henan province? No further introduction required. These places feel obligated to exaggerate their conditions in order to compete with the big cities and coastal destinations, thus the appearance of amazing natural scenery and those lovely chirping birds just outside the window of the high-tech computer research facility.

Dear Mr. T:

Henan province does not make the Confucius Top 10 list of great places to work in China. If I were to compile a top 20 list then there's hope it could tie for the 20th position with Inner Mongolia but only if the employment package includes free kung fu lessons from a Shao Lin Temple master's granddaughter. (and only if she's good looking and can speak French!)

You amuse me.
