teachinator Posted July 31, 2006 at 09:38 PM Report Share Posted July 31, 2006 at 09:38 PM Sorry to repeat this question -- I did read the discussion from June but feel that that poster had slightly different needs from mine. I am going to China next month to take a short course in Chinese and I very much want to buy an electronic dictionary before I go. My requirements are these: 1. English/Chinese and Chinese/English translations (probably this goes without saying) 2. has excellent speaker quality and uses good standard mainland accent 3. shows both simplified and traditional characters in Chinese translation 4. shows both characters and pinyin in Chinese translation 5. accepts pinyin input 6. translates common words from two-character input (e.g. "pengyou"). Thanks to that previous thread for pointing out this feature is not always present. 7. has a screen display that is large and easy to read (my eyes are not that good) I don't think I need to be able to input handwriting. I would really appreciate your recommendations!
td36285n Posted August 1, 2006 at 05:01 AM Report Share Posted August 1, 2006 at 05:01 AM I wrote an article on my website about three dictionaries, two of which are electronic talking dictionaries. Perhaps it'll be of interest to you. http://www.chinese-language-institutes.com/(Article)%20Dictionary.html
PollyWaffle Posted August 1, 2006 at 07:44 AM Report Share Posted August 1, 2006 at 07:44 AM you're really better off waiting till you get to china, going to a cyber mart, trying a few & deciding... it's way cheaper & if you are patient you'll get something you like
gato Posted August 2, 2006 at 02:06 AM Report Share Posted August 2, 2006 at 02:06 AM The current PlecoDict has everything you want except the speech capability. They are currently working on a version with speech. See http://www.pleco.com/pdpreview.html
