roddy Posted May 12, 2005 at 07:37 AM Report Share Posted May 12, 2005 at 07:37 AM I'm curious as to whether people prefer using the traditional Forums View or the Portal View. Comments, as well as votes, are welcome. They run independently, and both are staying - just curious. Roddy
skylee Posted May 12, 2005 at 08:18 AM Report Share Posted May 12, 2005 at 08:18 AM I use the forums view only when I want to start a new thread and have to find the appropriate forum (I think I can't do this at the portal view, right?), and when I want to search for something and have a vague idea of where that something is. gougou Posted May 12, 2005 at 01:24 PM Report Share Posted May 12, 2005 at 01:24 PM I use neither, the "New Posts" can cater to all my needs...
nipponman Posted May 12, 2005 at 05:52 PM Report Share Posted May 12, 2005 at 05:52 PM I dislike the portal view personally, and prefer the forum view. Although, I cannot vote...
TCcookie Posted May 13, 2005 at 04:36 AM Report Share Posted May 13, 2005 at 04:36 AM I voted for "forums view," but I do the same thing gougou does. New Posts is where it's at for me.

wix Posted May 13, 2005 at 08:14 AM Report Share Posted May 13, 2005 at 08:14 AM Forums view is good if you want to find something. Portal is nice because it gives you an overview of recent posts without having to go into the forums themselves. However, the new posts function is also useful for this. IN summary: portal and new posts are the main pages I use to navigate the site.
roddy Posted May 13, 2005 at 08:28 AM Author Report Share Posted May 13, 2005 at 08:28 AM Although, I cannot vote... I have no idea why Can you vote in other polls? If there's an issue pm me, or make a bug report, but there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to. Yeah, I think most people either go forums.php > New posts, or index.php (portal) > new posts. The forumdisplay.php pages (eg) don't seem to get much use, as people go directly to topics from new posts. I'm just asking out of curiousity really, but it's also useful for me to know, for example, where I should put an announcement to make sure that most people see it. I want to keep the portal view as index.php, as I think it's a more interesting 'snapshot' of the site for people visiting us via links. confucius Posted May 15, 2005 at 05:39 AM Report Share Posted May 15, 2005 at 05:39 AM I'm a portal person. I like to see the latest Signese.com sign and read a few post intros before I hit that "new posts" button. An announcement would also appear as one of the "new posts", so I don't see how I could possibly miss it.
Jim Posted May 17, 2005 at 03:38 PM Report Share Posted May 17, 2005 at 03:38 PM It's an exciting neck and neck race on the poll at the moment isn't it? can we start having side bets? I've got 10 kuai says portal will win (and that's what I voted for myself)
roddy Posted May 17, 2005 at 03:42 PM Author Report Share Posted May 17, 2005 at 03:42 PM I'll take that bet, and then go 'adjust' the database . . . Perhaps it's biased - people who use the portal are more likely to see the poll . . . Roddy
shibo77 Posted May 18, 2005 at 01:06 PM Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 at 01:06 PM I like the forums view, maybe because I'm a boring person. -Shibo
Jose Posted May 18, 2005 at 06:09 PM Report Share Posted May 18, 2005 at 06:09 PM I prefer the portal view, as it allows me to have a quick glance at the new posts. However, I think the forums view is better as a home page. It is probably more useful for people who access chineseforums.com for the first time, so they can see what sort of topics are discussed in the forums. By the way, welcome back, Shibo! It's nice to see you posting around here again.

roddy Posted May 19, 2005 at 02:47 AM Author Report Share Posted May 19, 2005 at 02:47 AM If you always go direct to New Posts, you can set your favorite to http://www.chinese-forums.com/search.php?do=getnew and save yourself a click. Jim Posted May 22, 2005 at 03:05 AM Report Share Posted May 22, 2005 at 03:05 AM My offer of a bet's looking a bit foolish now, or have you been gaming the poll after all Roddy? Collect your CNY 10 at your leisure! I agree that the new posts feature is very nice too. Best of all I guess is that the board is flexible enough to let you choose your favourite view yourself - now that's real democracy!
roddy Posted May 24, 2005 at 02:09 PM Author Report Share Posted May 24, 2005 at 02:09 PM Will close the poll now and start a new one on a link directory Was interesting to see how the poll ended up, particularly the way the forums view caught up and won. Now, where's my 10Y, Jim . . . Roddy
